Quinn Simmons, the U.S. national road champion, claimed his first victory of 2026 at the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alps, outpacing the chasing peloton in a thrilling breakaway finish to Stage 4. This triumph marks Simmons' first win since the Tour de Suisse last summer, providing a much-needed boost in confidence ahead of the Tour de France.
The 167.4km stage from Le Puy-en-Velay to Montrond-les-Bains featured a lumpy profile with five moderate climbs, offering the perfect opportunity for a breakaway. Simmons, riding in his stars-and-stripes jersey, demonstrated his strength by bridging across to a group and forming the main break of the day.
Despite the main pack's relentless pursuit, the lead group, including Simmons, worked together effectively. The gap never exceeded two minutes, and with 25km to go, it was down to a mere 50 seconds. Teams like Cofidis, Alpecin-Deceuninck, and Visma-Lease a Bike drove the chase, with Tudor also contributing.
Simmons' performance was particularly impressive, as he had been told to save his legs for the team time trial just two days prior. However, he dug deep and proved his worth, delivering his eighth career pro win.
This victory serves as a crucial confirmation for Simmons ahead of the Tour de France. He expressed his satisfaction, stating, 'I’ve never won a sprint before, so that’s good. The Tour is the biggest race of the year, and I think today and yesterday I showed that I deserve to be there.'
The race continues with Stage 5, a 195.8km route from Saint-Chamond to Parc des Oiseaux Villars-les-Dombes, featuring two fourth-category climbs in the opening 15km. This stage promises another opportunity for breakaways, but the rolling roads offer a final chance for opportunists before the race turns upward into the Alps on Friday.
As the race progresses, pre-race favorites Paul Seixas and Isaac del Toro are expected to make their moves, while overnight leader Alex Baudin defends the yellow jersey with a 12-second lead. The stage results are not included in this response.
